The renewable energy potential and environmental viability of the "Jewel in the Crown" of Scotland's marine resources is to be evaluated.
An assessment of the Pentland Firth and the Orkney Waters is to be carried out on commission from the Scottish government.
It will take into account not just the energy that could be generated in the area but also the environmental impacts and the opportunities for development.
Cabinet secretary for the environment Richard Lochhead said: "Renewables can drive long term economic recovery so it is appropriate that the Pentland Firth - often referred to as the 'Jewel in the Crown' of our marine energy potential - is properly mapped to maximise the full, sustainable economic benefit.
"The Marine Spatial Plan will set out opportunities for our main marine energy resource area and act as a planning tool for developers, regulators and existing users of the marine environment."
Two years ago, we launched a new marine arm to look at wave and tidal technology opportunities.
