Up to 7,000 more wind turbines could be built in UK seas, according to a new environmental study.
Experts considered marine geology and the impact of wind turbines on wildlife and human activity in the seas.
They concluded that a further 25 gigawatts (GW) of capacity could be constructed.
Responding to the report energy and climate change minister said: "In terms of electricity, offshore wind power could potentially make the single biggest contribution to our 2020 renewable energy target so it's vital we maximise the UK's natural resources to help in the fight against climate change."
The government had planned for the seas offshore UK to generate a total of 33GW of renewable energy to meet renewables and climate change targets.
With 8GW already built or planned, the report suggests that meeting those targets is possible.
Among the projects in the pipeline is our London Array – a 1GW wind farm in the Thames Estuary that will consist of 270 wind turbines.
In total we have 21 offshore and onshore wind farms.
