Eco-home construction starts

A new eco-home project that will have low energy bills for its social tenants has commenced.

Work on the 24-home Birchway project, which will feature living roofs and solar panels, has started in Northamptonshire.

The homes, which are being built in modules, will be transported to their final destination in London's Hillingdon borough when completed.

Having roofs covered in sedum – a tough low-growing shrub – will have a similar effect to loft insulation, and will help reduce heat loss.

The buildings will be constructed to the high standards of Level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and will also feature heat recovery systems and rainwater storage.

Solar panels on the roof will provide electricity for communal areas, while heating and hot water will be provided by biomass boiler.

We can provide customers with advice on reducing their energy bills by making their home more energy efficient.

While we have expertise in small-scale generation, we suggest that households start off with making their home more efficient by taking steps such as insulating lofts and cavity walls and improving draught proofing.
