Green home gets first residents

A family has moved into a home that is laden with energy saving and carbon cutting features.

The new residents of Camden's EcoHome will have their energy expenditure monitored as part of a trial of various energy saving mechanisms which are being trialled at the Victorian home.

If the trial is successful, the measures such as extensive insulation, draught proofing and solar thermal heating panels could be rolled out across the borough's 7,000 homes from a similar period.

According to the council, the home, which will have lower electricity bills as a result of energy efficiency and renewable generation, will emit 80 per cent less carbon dioxide that it did before being refurbished.

"The EcoHome has been refurbished to a very high standard, making it an energy efficient home with much lower running costs," Chris Naylor, Executive Member for Homes and Housing Strategy said.

"The energy requirements of the home have been reduced by improving its thermal performance, to reduce the dependency of the home on non-sustainable energy sources and to minimise the environmental impact of the home as it is upgraded."

We offer households advice on methods to reduce their carbon emissions and have an 'interactive home' website where customers can go room by room learning about ways to reduce their energy bills.
