Solar panels at council HQ could cut costs

Solar panels installed on West Berkshire Council's headquarters could see its energy bills reduced.

A total of 66 panels, covering 85 square meters, were installed on the roof of the council's Newport offices.

The photovoltaic panels, which have a capacity of 11.2 kilowatts, will generate 10,000 kilowatt hours per year, according to Ardenham Energy, the company that carried out the installation.

Funding provided by the government's Low Carbon Buildings Programme Phase 2 helped pay for the new renewable energy devices on the council's roof as well as for a display that will keep track of energy generated and carbon dioxide emissions savings.

According to Ardenham Energy, installing the array took three days.

Earlier this year, we awarded a grant to Wyburns Primary School in Raleigh to install its own solar panels, through our Source community initiative.

We have also provided a €1 million (£907,000) grant for research into organic-inorganic hybrid photovoltaic research at the University of Surrey.
