Global accreditation schemes work best for global hotel chains, not for small hotels or the consumer, according to one sector commentator.
Such a proposal may focus on
sustainability or energy efficiency, but Laura Greenman, director at ecoescape, said it would be "doomed to failure".
"Creating green standards for hotels is one thing, but expecting them to be relevant to every single hotel on the planet is ludicrous," she said.
Ms Greenman explained that this was because the green ambitions of a small hotel in Wales were likely to be very different to those of a large resort in Dubai.
She added that a better plan was for hotels to use local resources carefully and innovatively in their operations and to continue to think up new green innovations.
Her comments echo those made in an earlier VISION interview by Justin Francis, co-founder of Responsible Travel, who said a one size fits all solution for hotels would not work.
