'Greater focus needed' on energy efficiency

When it comes to reducing carbon emissions and boosting business gas and electricity efficiency, there needs to be a greater focus on energy efficiency.

Such is the assertion of John Barwise, chairman of the Cumbria Green Business Forum, who said that he would like to see a greater emphasis on energy efficiency than is currently the case.

He added: "People fitting energy saving devices, cavity wall insulation, new efficient boilers, [plus] a whole range of energy efficient measures would benefit businesses as well, if not even more so than some of the renewable policies that have been put into place."

Mr Barwise went on to note that renewable energy was also an important factor in helping the UK to achieve its carbon emission reduction targets.

However, he added that Britain was lagging behind other countries in terms of these developments.

His comments come as the government this week unveiled its new paper, The UK Low Carbon Transition Plan: National Strategy for Climate & Energy.

The plan aims to offer incentives for businesses going green and to create a low carbon industry.
