London mayor Boris Johnson has announced plans for a multimillion pound eco-innovation fund to help businesses in the city go green.

The scheme aims to assist organisations in improving energy efficiency, enabling them to benefit from lower heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint.

Mr Johnson hopes the London Green Fund will help the city to meet its 60 per cent carbon reduction target by 2025 and unlock significant financial savings for businesses.

The initiative is just one of a number of eco-friendly schemes being developed by the mayor alongside the London Development Agency.

Martin Powell, director of project delivery at the organisation, said the fund will have a positive effect on both the economy and the environment.

"It is hoped that this green fund will act as a catalyst for organisations to retrofit their building stock, saving on business costs and carbon emissions," he commented.

The proposals come just days after Mr Johnson hailed the start of an "innovative programme" designed to reduce gas and electricity bills in the city.

Wembley police station became the first of 42 buildings in the Greater London Authority Group to receive energy efficiency upgrades as part of the initiative.ADNFCR-1843-ID-19291051-ADNFCR
