Public sector 'should lead the way in green IT'

It is up to the public sector in the UK to lead the way in green IT uptake, one sector commentator has claimed.

James Murray, editor at BusinessGreen.com, said: "The public sector does have a key role - it's the biggest purchaser of IT equipment with its huge IT services agenda and in a lot of technologies they are leading."

He added that should the public sector take this seriously then others would follow.

Mr Murray earlier stated that green IT can also prove useful to businesses as it could help them to achieve cheaper electricity bills in the workplace.

His comments follow recent research by Global Action Plan, which revealed that 60 per cent of respondents were not aware of the government's Greening Information Communications Technology (ICT) Strategy.

The strategy was published last July where the government pledged that by 2020, its ICT would be carbon neutral across its lifecycle.

Furthermore, the report revealed that 41 per cent of national government respondents were not aware of the strategy even though it specifically covers their area of activity.
