London mayor Boris Johnson has hailed the start of an "innovative programme" designed to help reduce emissions and
cut gas and electricity bills in the city.
Wembley police station this week became the first of 42 buildings in the Greater London Authority Group to receive an
energy efficiency upgrade as part of the plans.
The makeover includes the introduction of solar panels and replacement of old boilers, while solar film fitted on windows will help reflect sunshine and regulate temperature, reducing the need for air conditioning.
Mr Johnson said: "This marks the start of an innovative programme to slash carbon emissions in the same way across a wide range of public buildings in the Greater London Authority group."
He added that the measures will help save up to £1 million of taxpayers' money each year on fuel bills and help reduce emissions in the city.
The project comes after plans were announced for a home improvement scheme in Scotland that will see 144 properties across Ayr receive energy efficiency upgrades, enabling residents to benefit from
cheaper gas and electricity bills.
