New builds 'more energy-efficient'

Eco-conscious Britons considering investing in a new property could find that buying a new-build house is a good way to go green.

Speaking to the Independent, energy efficiency expert and head of housing and supply chain at the Energy Saving Trust Mat Colmer said that such properties save more fuel than older buildings.

"New-build homes are more energy-efficient," he stated, adding that as building regulations become more stringent, it makes sense to build efficiency into a property's structure rather than installing it afterwards.

Most newly-built properties come with features such as double glazing, roof insulation and cavity walls, which all help save fuel.

Mr Colmer went on to say that above the environmental issues, "we need to think about fuel supply".

"If you want to secure against increased heating and electricity costs, then being more efficient in your home is the way to go," he concluded.

The government recently published its Renewable Energy Strategy, which aims to cut CO2 levels by 80 per cent in just over 40 years' time through investment in renewable energy.ADNFCR-1843-ID-19282611-ADNFCR
