Gardening is an activity that can be enjoyed on a number of levels and by all age groups, one industry commentator has stated.
Phillip Turvil, knowledge development officer for Garden Organic, said that it was a particularly beneficial activity for schools to promote as it helped to get children excited about green issues.
"You get the interest, you get the link to the curriculum to make it sustainable, you get the parents involved to make it even more sustainable," he explained.
Mr Turvil added that gardening was a natural process for growing healthy, organic food and that it could be exciting in schools as children get to consume the produce they have grown.
However, there are additional ways to teach young people about
going green, including promoting energy efficiency.
The Carbon Trust recently revealed that increasing energy efficiency in schools could see educational establishments saving £70 million on their annual gas and electricity bills.
