'More nuclear needed' for lower emissions

Around ten to 15 new nuclear reactors are required to meet the UK's low carbon emissions targets by 2030, it is claimed.

Venkie Shantaram, partner at McKinsey & Company, said it was "absolutely critical" that there was no delay in pursuing nuclear power in an effort to reduce emissions.

And he added that the new reactors could be built without needing to secure any new sites for them.

John Cridland, deputy director general at Confederation of British Industry, added that there also needed to be a greater investment in renewable energy.

"The fundamental problem is that the current framework of government policy is actually not to deliver enough renewables of all sorts," he noted.

Mr Cridland stated that this meant the UK would continue its reliance on coal and gas, which was not optimal for achieving a low carbon and secure energy supply.

According to figures from the World Nuclear Association, nuclear power capacity worldwide is increasing steadily, with over 40 reactors currently under construction in 12 countries.
