The chief executive of E.ON has noted in the Times about the energy company's plans to invest in renewable energy.

Paul Golby wrote that E.ON will help to build the London Array, the world's largest offshore wind farm, as well as closing one oil-fired power station and two coal-fired ones over the next decade.

However, he also offered advice to Britons about how they can become more energy efficient and potentially benefit from cheaper gas and electricity bills.

While installing cavity wall insulation and double glazing play their part, Mr Golby said that E.ON will look to fit smart meters and other domestic heat-management systems.

"Soon such equipment will become commonplace, not just the preserve of the enlightened green consumer, and that will not only help to reduce carbon emissions but also help to keep bills affordable," he noted.

One homeowner in West Yorkshire is already making his property greener, according to the Telegraph.

John Anderson achieved cheaper electricity and gas bills by switching to low-energy lighting and insulating his walls and loft, while he sold his unused electricity, a scheme E.ON supports.ADNFCR-1843-ID-19276329-ADNFCR
