Community projects which support energy efficiency and renewable energy will receive £600,000 in funding from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts and the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Under the collaboration, direct funding and support packages worth £600,000 will be provided to 17 grassroots projects in England, energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband announced.

One group which is expected to benefit from the cash boost is Community Renewable Energy, a Newcastle-based organisation which promotes community-owned renewable energy projects.

London-based Islington Carbon Reduction Club is also set to receive money, which will support a Carbon Club programme where participants will agree to an annual carbon allowance.

Mr Miliband commented: "We want to support people in their efforts so they can reap the benefits of cleaner energy, a better quality of life and stronger, cohesive communities."

The government also recently announced its UK Low Carbon Transition Plan, helping households obtain cheaper electricity and gas bills by making their properties greener.ADNFCR-1843-ID-19272379-ADNFCR
