The government has this week unveiled its Renewable Energy Strategy, prompting one group to urge people to improve their energy efficiency by boosting the
insulation of their homes.
Moneysupermarket.com claims that the new strategy reveals that a third of the money spent on gas and electricity is wasted through poor
insulation, a figure it called "astonishing".
It added that this should prompt consumers into reducing their energy use wherever possible.
"While bills are currently low due to the lull in consumption over the summer months, it would be a real investment for the winter ahead to take measures now to better insulate homes, therefore making savings when bill payers really need them," the price comparison site continued.
The group went on to advise insulating pipes and fitting a lagging jacket to hot water tanks, which could pay for itself in cheaper gas and electric bills within a few months.
Furthermore, fitting loft
insulation and cavity wall
insulation could reduce heat loss by up to 25 per cent and 35 per cent respectively.
The Telegraph also recently advised turning down the thermostat by one degree Celsius, not leaving appliances on standby and switching off heating when going away as a way of lowering bills by £75 a year.
