Cardiff Council is set to deter thieves committed to stealing a
gas boiler from any of its properties by fitting the devices with a tag to ensure it is traceable.
According to 24dash, the local authority is tackling the problem in order to secure its residents' gas safety and also reduce the rising costs associated with the crime.
Indeed, officials claim that the act of stealing boilers from unoccupied properties in the city has led to a bill of some £100,000, with council tenants often left having to fork out for a replacement.
Furthermore, such an act could prove dangerous, even if the house is empty, as gas pipes may be damaged, posing a risk to any neighbouring households of carbon monoxide poisoning or an explosion.
South Wales Police Divisional Commander for Cardiff, Chief Superintendent Josh Jones said: "Tracking devices on boilers have been used in other areas of the UK, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of offences."
Homeowners wish to ensure their own
gas boiler does not pose a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning should contact the Gas Safe
TM Register.
