Britons looking for ways to save money may have already embraced energy efficiency as a way of achieving cheaper gas and electricity bills.
However, according to one sector commentator they could also improve the sustainability of their household by growing their own fruit and vegetables.
Lucy Halsall, editor of Grow Your Own magazine, said that growing such produce was proving to be a "hugely popular" pastime.
"The last couple of years there's been a massive increase in the popularity of growing your own food - fruit and vegetables," she noted.
And as well as saving people money on their grocery bills, Ms Halsall added that such a hobby could also be of the benefit of their diet and lifestyle.
Her comments came after the National Trust asserted that people in flats should be encouraged to grow their own fruit and veg on the 600 acres of window sills across the UK.
