Adding an extension to a home - such as a conservatory - could boost a property's value by up to five per cent, it has been suggested.
However, Britons could see their money go further still by ensuring the space is green and securing
cheaper gas and electric bills as a result.
Indeed, Ratedpeople.com suggests that heating a conservatory is one of the most important considerations when it comes to building the extension.
The group claims that over the last 15 years glass has become up to three times more energy efficient, allowing heat to be reflected into conservatories even on cold days.
However, keeping the space cool during hot spells may be equally important in keeping electricity bills down, so that homeowners do not have to rely on an electric fan.
The group notes that this may be achieved through solar-controlled glass in the roof, which can help to keep out up to 75 per cent of heat.
And it seems more Britons may be considering an extension, after the Independent reported that the credit crunch was inspiring people to carry out home improvements in order to add to the value of their property.
