Free phone service to offer energy bill advice

A free phone service offering advice for pensioners and low income families is launching a new campaign to help consumers reduce their gas and electricity bills.

The Home Heat Helpline's Winter Starts Now drive - supported by energy firms, charities and housing associations - aims to provide information on capped energy tariffs and home insulation.

Chief executive of the Energy Retail Association Garry Felgate urged consumers to begin preparing for the colder months now.

"The weather may be hot and dry today, but it's a fact that winter is only 100 days away and the time for action is now."

He added that many people could be cutting their energy costs and should consider inquiring about loft lagging and cavity wall insulation before winter sets in.

In related news, the UK Green Building Council is calling upon the government to introduce a Pay As You Save scheme, whereby the cost of installing energy efficiency measures is subsidised by the future savings made on that household's energy bills, the BBC reports.
