Scottish homes receive energy efficiency upgrade

Those living in a town in Scotland may be on track to receive cheaper electric and gas bills as a result of a forthcoming energy efficiency project.

Residents in one Scottish town could be set to benefit from reduced gas and electricity bills as a widescale home improvement project gets underway.

Some 144 properties across Ayr are to be upgraded in a £6.75 million project.

With the scheme due to start next Monday (July 27th), gas central heating will be installed in three blocks of maisonettes, while insulation will also be improved, something which could result in tenants receiving cheaper gas bills.

This part of the scheme is expected to be completed by spring 2011.

Douglas Campbell, housing spokesperson for South Ayrshire council, states: "This is an exciting project that will really make a difference to the lives of the residents."

He adds the energy efficiency project also signals the local authority's commitment towards improving its housing stock.

Similar improvements were recently made to the sheltered housing complex near Newcastle where an ageing district heating system has been replaced with more energy efficient boilers.
