New plans for a waste packaging strategy in the UK have been unveiled by Hilary Benn, the Secretary for the Environment.
The new strategy aims to deal with packaging on every level, from production to disposal, working directly with organisations based at all points of the supply and distribution chain.
Commenting on the news, a spokesperson for Waste Watch, welcomed the proposal.
He said that it had been a "long time" coming but that it was great it was now here.
The representative added that waste management was often controlled by looking at the packaging on one product and deeming there was not much, while consumers would be focusing on their combined waste packaging.
"This move to carbon would definitely have benefits. You need some kind of a robust methodology to be able to compare packaging," he noted.
As part of the new strategy, the recyclability of packaging will be improved and clear guidance will be provided for manufacturers on designing it with this in mind.
