Ultimately, it is up to mobile phone owners to take action to reduce the amount of energy they are wasting by leaving their handsets plugged in for longer than necessary, one sector commentator has claimed.
Thomas Newton, lead content writer at Mobile-Phones.co.uk, said the average mobile phone takes only two to three hours to charge.
However, despite this, research by moneysupermarket.com recently revealed that one in eight adults will leave their mobiles on charge for eight hours a day.
"One possible solution to combat this would be for manufacturers to print an average charging time clearly on the packaging of the box," Mr Newton suggested.
He added that another option was to release the charging time as a specification alongside other battery statistics, such as talk time and standby power.
Moneysupermarket.com advises phone owners that one way to
achieve cheaper electricity bills is to use a timer plug when charging a handset overnight.
