Hever Castle in Kent is now more
energy efficient and environmentally friendly thanks to its new boiler, it has been reported.
The Kent and Sussex Courier reports that the new boiler - which uses sustainable resources such as waste woodchip from sawmills as fuel - will be used to provide hot water and heating to a number of buildings on its site.
These include a restaurant, shop and several residential properties.
A grant of £139,000 from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, a £100,000 Carbon Trust loan and an estate investment of £460,000 all helped to fund the new installation, which was switched on by the Duke of Kent.
Chief executive Duncan Leslie noted: "We're making a commitment to being greener while, at the same time, reducing fuel bills. We're making the castle as energy self-sufficient as possible without spoiling the attraction."
Woodchip boilers use
sustainable energy to function, which can make them a greener central heating option.
