'More investment needed' in wind power

There needs to be more investment in wind turbines, one sector commentator has urged, in news that may be of interest to Britons keen to learn more about renewable energy.

A spokesperson for the British Wind Energy Association said there was a market for wind farms like the London Array project, which E.ON is part of.

And she noted that the Government's renewable energy strategy states that wind power needs to be taken from its current three gigawatts onshore to 14 gigawatts by 2020.

She added that all investment so far had come from private capital rather than the government, which was not subsidising such projects.

"What we need to understand is there is an appetite there amongst industry and private investors to deploy more wind energy," the representative concluded.

In spring 2007, the UK agreed with other member states to an EU-wide target of 20 per cent renewable energy by 2020.

Such states have now signed the Renewable Energy Directive, which includes a UK share of 15 per cent of energy from renewables by 2020.
