While additional living space is still one of the most popular features which attract buyers in the housing market today, energy efficiency is also likely to become increasingly sought-after, it has been revealed.

According to Nationwide, the introduction of energy performance certificates within home information packs has meant that energy efficiency is on the agenda of many homeowners.

"While we want warmer homes we have become more aware of fuel costs and also of the increased emphasis on our environmental responsibilities," the group asserted.

As a result, Britons have become increasingly conscious of saving power, it added.

Nationwide went on to note that this meant more people were also focussed on improving both the energy efficiency and comfort of a property.

The building society concluded that energy efficiency and the ability to achieve cheaper gas and electric bills was likely to become more important in the future.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, greener central heating, such as adding a condensing boiler or heating controls, can also help to attract new buyers.
