One Yorkshire local authority has received praise for the action it has taken in boosting energy efficiency in the area.

Kirklees council in West Yorkshire has been running the Warm Zone scheme to roll out home insulation across the region, which has seen it win the Ashden Award for excellence in the field of sustainable energy.

It picked up first prize in the category, after offering insulation to homes in the region free of charge.

As of April, 67 per cent of households (115,000) had been visited and more than 25,000 had received insulation measures.

Furthermore, nearly 100 full-time jobs and 60 part-time roles have been created as a result of the scheme.

Commenting on the news, Dr Phil Webber, spokesperson for Kirklees council, said there was "intense interest" from other UK councils to repeat the project.

"This sort of work does pick up very well in terms of payback and jobs and fuel poverty and health. There's all sorts of good reasons for doing it," he added.
