'Go online' for cheaper electricity bills

Consumers may find they can achieve cheaper gas and electric bills by taking advantage of online energy plans, it has been claimed.

According to uSwitch.com, energy suppliers offer their best deals and lowest prices through their online energy plans and homeowners should take advantage of this information.

However, currently only five per cent of - or 1.3 million - UK households are on online energy plans, while just one in five consumers regularly seek out and switch to new deals, according to Ofgem.

Indeed, uSwitch.com states that Britons are spending £1.69 billion too much on their combined energy bills every year by not going online.

Commenting on the findings, Will Marples, energy expert at the website, stated: "Whether it's down to lack of understanding, poor communication or apathy, there is absolutely no reason for large numbers of consumers to be overpaying for their household energy."

He added that there was an online energy plan to suit everyone.

The Telegraph's Kara Gammell recently stated that she saved a total of £1,200 on her yearly utilities bills by making changes such as regularly checking her gas meter.
