HSE: Always check gas installers are registered

When it comes to boiler maintenance, Britons should keep in mind that all gas engineers must be Gas SafeTM registered, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has urged.

The comments follow a recent case which saw a man being jailed for 84 days for carrying out boiler installations and gas fittings despite not being registered and consequently being prohibited from doing so.

Kevin Hall, of Woodpecker Way, Cannock, trading as Norfix Plumbing and Heating, pleaded guilty at the hearing after it was discovered that households he had been hired to work in were left with no heating or hot water.

The HSE first began its investigation last year and found that Hall was not a Council of Registered Gas Installers (Corgi) member and so served a prohibition notice on him.

However, he continued to carry out gas work.

Commenting on the case, HSE investigating inspector Andrew Bowker said: "HSE would urge anyone having gas work undertaken to ensure that the contractor carries a Gas SafeTM Register identity card."

As of April this year, the Gas SafeTM Register took over from Corgi as the UK's official gas safety trademark.
