When it was revealed that a boiler at a Kirklees council building was faulty, the local authority saw the incident as the perfect opportunity to become more energy efficient.
As a result, a new biomass boiler has been installed at Clare House in Huddersfield - a facility which provides accommodation, advice and information to asylum seekers, as well as lodgings for council staff.
Huddersfield Daily Examiner reports that that the installation is the council's first in a long-term plan to become more energy efficient and reduce its carbon footprint.
Commenting on the news boiler, Andrew Marchington, joint cabinet member lead for strategic housing, said: "I am delighted that through hard work and planning this development has come to fruition."
Solar panels have also been installed in order to provide between 60 and 70 per cent of the building's hot water needs.
Biomass boilers can be more energy efficient than a
gas boiler and they also use a fuel source that is sustainable, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, condensing boilers are also a more energy efficient choice, as they burn up to 90 per cent of their fuel, reducing waste in the process.
