While some homeowners may be considering having their annual gas boiler service now in time for the winter, they may be pleased to hear that there are now thousands of engineers and businesses they can contact to carry out the work that are Gas SafeTM registered.

The group asserts that 56,500 businesses and 121,000 individual engineers are now members of the UK's official trademark in gas safety.

Commenting on the news, Peter Eldridge, chief executive of Gas SafeTM Register, said: "It is a strong vote of confidence in the Gas SafeTM Register and suggests that engineers and businesses recognise the importance of being registered."

He added that such engineers also had a duty to their customers to ensure they know the importance of Gas SafeTM, which aims to reduce the incidences of carbon monoxide leaks from boilers, or explosions and fires relating to gas appliances in the UK.

Britons may also wish to take the time to ask their engineer about energy efficiency.

A poll by Lychgate Projects on behalf of the Energy Saving Trust recently revealed that 81 per cent of plumbers claimed they would offer recommendations on energy efficiency to the people who hired them.
