Recession 'may be getting better'

Recent indicators reveal that while the recession is not getting any worse, the economic downturn in the UK may even be improving, according to one sector commentator.

The comments from Michael Baxter, economist at Defaqto, may be welcomed by Britons who have been living on careful budgets as the credit crunch and fuel prices force them to tighten their belts.

"With the rate of interest so low and all this quantitative easing if it didn't put a little bit of life into the economy then you really would be worried," he said.

Mr Baxter added that there was "absolutely no doubt" the financial downturn was slowing.

And the latest composite lending figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development reveal that the UK is showing tentative signs of a pause in the economic slowdown.

However, for Britons who feel their own money woes have yet to ease, saving power usage around the home could result in money saved on energy bills.

This may be achieved by investigating forms of sustainable energy, such as solar and wind energy, or purchasing a more energy-efficient boiler or low-energy lighting.
