Firms in the UK need to better prepared for the introduction of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) programme, one environmental agency has warned.
Speaking to DIY Week, Envos stated that 90 per cent of British businesses need to improve their energy efficiency and use of sustainable energies if they are to keep up with the changes outlined in the initiative.
According to the government, CRC is due to be launched in April 2010 and is a 'cap and trade' scheme.
It results in those businesses with higher carbon emissions paying more to be allowed to emit waste with carbon credits being sold at a price of £12 per tonne of the CO2 they emit.
Speaking to the news provider, Wade Barker, Envos managing director, said: "Judging by the level of preparedness we have seen among UK businesses, a lot of the organisations affected by this legislation will be caught unaware."
She advised organisations to make an assessment of their energy usage as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Ed Miliband, Energy and Climate Change Secretary, and Peter Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business recently wrote in the Times about the importance of businesses being energy efficient if the UK's low carbon vision is to be met.
