Renewable energy technology will secure energy supplies and combat climate change, according to Mike O'Brien, minister at the Department for Energy and Climate Change.
Announcing new financial support for offshore wind power, the minister highlighted
the importance of renewable energy.
He said: "Renewable energy is a weapon in our armoury to secure future energy supplies, reduce our reliance on foreign imports, and help tackle climate change."
The minister was speaking at a meeting of renewable energy leaders and the ports industry.
At the meeting he announced £10 million to support the development of offshore wind power and highlighted other measures the government is taking to encourage the industry.
He said the government was taking steps such as "changing the planning laws, increased financial support and ensuring sufficient access to the grid".
Later this week the Renewable Obligation programme will increase financial support for offshore wind projects by 50 per cent.
We have 21 offshore and onshore wind farms and can offer customers
