Renewable energy and energy efficiency are to receive a total of €9 billion (£8.3 billion) as part of a new budget to support and promote the "green economy".

Danuta Hubner, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, announced that a total of €105 billion is to be invested in the "green economy" between 2007 and 2013 to produce long term jobs and sustainability in keeping with the Cohesion Policy.

Of that money €4.8 billion is to be spent on renewable energies and €4.2 billion for energy efficiency.

Ms Hubner said: "Support for the green economy and the environment goes hand-in-hand with the Cohesion Policy's objective to deliver sustainable growth, jobs and competitiveness.

"In a difficult financial climate, this investment will be instrumental in creating long-term employment and reviving local economies, as well as underpinning the EU's commitment to the fight against climate change."

Across the EU there has been a commitment to cut carbon emissions by 20 per cent and generate 20 per cent of energy from renewables by 2020.

We have a number of renewable energy projects across the UK, including 21 onshore and offshore wind turbines which will contribute toward the UK target of generating 15 per cent of energy from renewables.
