Is the UK a wasteful nation?

As Britons become increasingly concerned about their impact on the environment, they may wish to look to where they could make their own lifestyles greener by not adopting a throw away habit.

Indeed, this could see households taking better care over their home energy consumption, which as well as being more beneficial to the environment, could see them benefiting from cheaper gas and electricity bills.

Other changes consumers may wish to make is the frequency with which they throw away old or broken items of clothing or technology.

Are Brits wasteful?

Caroline Laitner, a spokesperson for Waste Watch, says: "As a nation we do throw too much away and whereas a lot of people have got round the fact we need to recycle as much as we can, what we really want to be doing is cutting out the waste at the source."

She adds that consumers should focus on buying less and ensuring that the products they do purchase will last longer.

Furthermore, the green expert claims that Britons should take better care of their belongings and when the time comes for them to be disposed of, they should ensure they do it in the correct way.

In addition to recycling, people may also wish to consider taking their unwanted belongings to a charity shop, swap party or selling them on an internet auction site to make a little extra money.

Can home energy efficiency reduce waste?

In addition to throwing things away being damaging to the environment, wasting energy could have just as negative an effect.

Unnecessary use of home energy such as gas and electricity can result in more carbon emissions being pumped into the atmosphere, leading to climate change.

With this in mind, Britons could choose to improve their home energy efficiency by taking care to switch off electrical appliances when not in use, turn down their central heating and taking showers rather than baths.

As well as helping the environment, such actions could also see consumers lowering their annual gas and electricity bills.
