When West Bridgford resident Jake Jackson accepted help from the Energy Saving Trust (EST) to show him where he could increase his energy efficiency or add renewable energy technology, he was pleased to discover that his gas and electricity bills fell as a result.

The Nottingham Evening Post reports that Mr Jackson now believes his home is up to the same standard as others on his street.

Following a visit to his house, EST advisors were able to offer him a number of recommendations designed to lower his energy bills.

These included having a wood-burning boiler, wind turbine and solar panels fitted, to allow Mr Jackson to reduce his reliance on the National Grid and make use of renewable energy and sustainable power.

"It's a balance between wanting to do the right thing in making a contribution in reducing carbon emissions - which I see as a civic duty in some senses - and obviously not putting ourselves seriously out of pocket," he said.

The EST website contains a number of tips designed to help Britons reduce their carbon footprints.
