Boris Johnson puts energy efficiency on the map

Ten London boroughs are set to receive money to help them increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions as they become Low Carbon Zones, it has been reported.

Mayor Boris Johnson told the London Congress that boroughs, including Lambeth, Islington and Westminster, will each receive a minimum of £200,000 to put towards energy saving initiatives within both the commercial and residential sectors.

It is hoped that carbon emissions will be cut by 20.12 per cent by 2012 as a result of the scheme.

And along with reduced emissions, households and businesses may also be able to benefit from cheaper gas and electricity bills.

Sally Prentice, cabinet member for environment on Lambeth Council, commented on the news, saying: "Cutting people's fuel consumption by making their homes more energy efficient saves them money, which is vital for families on low incomes."

She added that Brixton's Low Carbon Zone would aim to involve every household and business.
