Simple steps to cheaper gas and electricity bills

Many households may be feeling increasingly concerned over how they will meet their energy bills this winter as the credit crunch continues to put pressure on their finances.

However, Alison Hunt, in an article for lovemoney.com, suggests there are a number of simple steps they can take to ensure that they can slash their gas and electricity bills.

These include turning the thermostat down by one degree, turning the hot water tank to 60 degrees, switching off appliances instead of leaving them on standby, washing at 30 degrees, unplugging phone chargers and using energy-saving lightbulbs.

She adds that curtains can be effective insulators, while people should only boil as much water as they need and putting on an extra jumper could be a cheaper way of getting warm than turning up the central heating.

By following these steps, households could find themselves enjoying cheaper gas and electricity bills this winter, Ms Hunt notes.

In a separate lovemoney.com article, Serena Cowdy states that consumers may be able to take advantage of a scheme that provides funding towards home insulation.
