Wind power 'offers triple benefits' for renewable energy mix

The advantages of wind power as part of a renewable energy mix are threefold, according to RenewableUK.

Figures from the European Commission show that, across EU member states in 2009, wind power accounted for 4.2 per cent of total electricity output.

This ranks the technology as the second-most widely used system of producing renewable energy, with hydropower ahead as contributing 11.6 per cent to total output across the continent.

Biomass ranked third as the source for 3.5 per cent of all energy used, with solar producing 0.4 per cent of the continent's power.

In all, renewable energy sources amounted to 19.9 per cent of Europe's power needs in 2009, the figures show.

However, RenewableUK head of communications Nick Medic argues that wind power represents a "win-win scenario" for future electricity needs.

A direct advantage of investment into wind turbines and farms is the economic and employment opportunity that the technology represents.

Its output can be cheaper than domestic fossil fuel production, according to Mr Medic, assuring the UK's energy security for the future.

Meanwhile, the targets that are in place for reducing carbon emissions could also be achieved in part through a greater use of renewable resources.

"So it's a comprehensive set of benefits which is really threefold," says Mr Medic.

However, there are associated advantages that go beyond the main ones, which he also addresses.

They include employment possibilities and business opportunities on a local scale as communities see investment into wind power.

RenewableUK, as the trade body for both wind and marine energy generation, is also looking to meet its own targets for raising employment in the sector.

Its deadline coincides with the government's carbon emission reduction schedule, meaning more people should be working in renewable energy jobs - and helping to cut the ecological footprint of the UK as a whole - by 2020.ADNFCR-1843-ID-19905163-ADNFCR
