FAQs
FAQ Subject - Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that is produced when any fossil fuel such as gas, coal, oil or wood is burnt without enough oxygen. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it so you don’t know when it’s present. If your gas appliance is faulty, or there is not enough ventilation in the room, carbon monoxide may be produced.
If you suspect a carbon monoxide leak:
- Turn off the appliance until it’s been checked by a Gas SafeTM, registered engineer
- If you have a solid fuel or oil burning appliance, have it checked by an OFTEC or HETAS® approved engineer
- Open the windows & go outside to get some fresh air
- Seek medical advice
- If someone is seriously ill from carbon monoxide poisoning take them outside immediately & call for urgent medical help
- DO NOT smoke, DO NOT switch lights on or off or do anything that could cause a spark.
