The Sustainable City vision brings the environment, and carbon savings, into every aspect of public life where people and businesses can take action to reduce their own carbon emissions while enabling low carbon regeneration and economic growth. The Sustainable City focuses upon five key sectors: housing, business, transport, community engagement and education and public sector buildings.
What is a sustainable city?
Cities across the UK have commitments to becoming more sustainable in order to improve the future for the people that live and work there.
The
Climate Change Act 2008 set legally binding emission reduction targets for 2020 - committing the UK to a 34% reduction in green house gases. Therefore Local Authorities are obligated to contribute to this target and most cities have 20:20 plans in place to help them to deliver a sustainable future.
The areas included in city plans differ by area, but they tend to include elements to address:
- Energy generation and networks
- Transport
- Buildings
- The local economy
- And society
