Community Energy

Innovative, sustainable and reliable

The threat of climate change means we need to provide vital energy for the UK in a way that minimises the impact we have on the environment - while still being reliable and affordable.

We’ve become a recognised leader in the development of decentralised (community) energy. Created from renewable sources, it brings low and even zero carbon heat, hot water and electricity directly to local communities. And, because it is produced close to where it's needed, community energy reduces transmission losses and, over the longer term, the cost of heating and electricity.

What is community energy?

As the name suggests, community energy is produced locally rather than at a large plant elsewhere and sent through the National Grid. This local generation lowers carbon emissions. Security of supply is also increased nationally as customers no longer have to share a supply or rely on relatively few, large and remote traditional power stations.

The opportunities

For housebuilders, social landlords, developers and building consortia, community energy is a cost effective route to achieving carbon targets. Our approach allows you to promote a locally provided, sustainable, competitive and smarter energy choice.

The benefits of community energy

  • Efficient - Reduces transmission losses, captures otherwise lost heat
  • Renewable - Low or zero carbon fuel sources, maximises opportunities for renewal
  • Flexible - Works with local resources, matched to local energy demand
  • Secure - Reliable and locally controlled generation, encourages diversity
  • Local - Communities learn more about energy, encourages changes in behaviour
