Air Source Heat Pumps
ASHP
A system for converting large volumes of air at ambient temperature into heat and hot water.
CERT
Carbon Emission Reduction Target
This is the name for the obligation on energy suppliers previously referred to as the Energy Efficiency Commitment 2008-11 or EEC3.
CHP
Combined Heat and Power
Microgeneration solution emcompassing Mini CHP, Micro CHP and Large Scale CHP.
DE
Decentralised Energy The generation of energy - heat, hot water and/or electricity - close to where it is needed. Increasingly based on renewable energy sources.
District Cooling
An energy efficient system for distributing chilled water to buildings for air conditioning that has been created in a central location.
District heating District (or community) heating provides heat to a number of homes or buildings from a network of underground and well-insulated pipes fed by a central source. District heating can supply heat to housing developments, whole towns, areas of cities or sometimes entire cities.
ESCo
Energy Service Company (or Energy Supply Company)
A commercial entity created specifically to invest in, build, operate and maintain a decentralised energy solution.
Feed in Tariff Feed in tariffs will offer a guaranteed price to small scale energy generators for the power they send to the National Grid ‘above the market rate for electricity’ over a long term period. Feed in tariffs will become available during 2010.
GSHP Ground Source Heat Pumps A system for harvesting ground heat for heating and/or hot water.
LCBP
The Low Carbon Buildings Programme
PFI
Private Finance Initiative
Renewable Heat Incentive The Government is to introduce a banded system for supporting different renewable heat technologies by different amounts under its Renewable Heat Incentive. It is currently anticipated that incentives will come into force in 2011.
ROC
Renewable Obligation Certificates
These are ‘green’ certificates issued to an accredited generator for eligble renewable electricity generated within the UK. Two ROCs are earned for each megawatt hour of renewable output generated by microgeneration up to 50kW and one ROC is earned for over 50kW. We can purchase ROCs from your organisation giving you the opportunity to generate income from your sustainable energy solution .
Smart Buildings
The term used to describe buildings that are proven to reduce energy bills and reduce carbon emissions by monitoring and controlling the heat, hot water, ventilation and electrical services of the buildings and adjusting them.
