Is your home ready to power your electric car?

Following the likes of France and India, the UK Government has announced plans to stop the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

So although there are over 100,000 on the road already, an electric car boom is definitely on the horizon.

And we’re accelerating towards it

For years, car manufacturers have been ramping up their electric car production. In the past few months, we’ve seen the first of the major companies announce they’re going totally electric. It’s even inspired Volkswagen to bring back its iconic campervan too.

But why are we heading that way? An electric future means a renewable one - improving our lives and the environment. It will ultimately contribute towards improved air quality and health, especially for people living in our highly populated and polluted cities.

It should mean more cost-effective travel too. Owning an electric vehicle means less road tax, and will open up a new world of cheap and convenient ways to fuel our vehicles – even from the comfort of our own homes.

But are you ready for it yet?

Getting an electric car may be one thing; preparing to power it is another. If you’re on the road, you can now power up your car at one of the growing list of charging points around the UK.

However, having your own charging point at home is ultimately the most convenient. As most car journeys in the UK average at less than 25 miles, it’s simple to then charge up your car whenever you need to, using your own electricity.

Once you have the car and charging point, it’s just a case of making sure you’re on the right sort of energy tariff to properly power your electric car from home.

And that’s where we come in

While traditionally fuelled cars may be on the road for a while, we’re helping to get ready for an electric future now

As electricity use will inevitably increase through home car charging, the latest step we’ve made is to create a new home energy tariff specifically for electric vehicle owners - E.ON Fixed 1 Year Electric Vehicle.

We know electric vehicle owners often find it most convenient to charge them up overnight, so we’ve designed it with both a competitive day rate and a cheaper night rate. And if getting cost-effective travel and home energy isn’t enough, you’ll feel even better knowing we match all your energy use with renewable sources.

How the renewables matching works

Wherever it’s generated, power gets mixed together on the national grid, so suppliers can't actually trace exactly where an individual customer’s electricity has come from.

What we do instead is match the volume of your estimated electricity and gas use with renewable energy. So while there aren’t any additional environmental benefits to the tariff,  we provide you with a Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) and Green Gas Certificate (GGC). That means you can rest assured your energy is backed by a UK renewable source.

How you can get started today

If you already own an electric car, give us a call on 0333 202 4680 to chat through what to do next.

To power both your home and car through our tariff you’ll need a smart meter operating in Economy 7 mode, so it can apply different rates during the day and night. If you don’t have a smart meter yet, check if you’re able to get one first. If you’re eligible, you can book an appointment to have one installed within around 2-4 weeks’ time. And after that, you’ll be good to go on your new electric vehicle tariff.

We’re heading in the same direction as you

Electric vehicles are just one example of how our lives are being transformed by new technologies. It’s a journey we’re committed to at E.ON; a changing world with different needs means we’re evolving our energy products and solutions to help.

Watch this space – there’s more to come along the way.
