2019 – A smarter, more sustainable year

It's the time of year when we reflect on what we've achieved in the past 12 months. Here at E.ON, we're proud to have introduced a range of initiatives that have helped our customers become even more sustainable.

Here are just a few highlights.

100% renewable electricity

The electricity we supply to each of our 3.3 million customers’ homes is now backed by 100% renewable electricity1, including wind, biomass and solar, at no extra cost. We’ve also signed a new two-and-a-half-year deal to buy the power from more than 20 British wind farms, supplying sustainable power to the grid and further supporting our commitment to providing renewable electricity for our customers.

Committing to help clear the air

We’ve been highlighting the issue of air pollution and how our solutions can help clear the air. We’ve produced our whitepaper on the topic to help set out the challenge, installed a 16-foot pair of 'LUNGS' to draw attention to the issue, and launched a whole host of activities to raise awareness of the issue and to help people understand the steps they can take to help – from installing solar panels and using electric cars, to simple things like getting the right pollutant-eating plants in your home.

Helping bring smart meters to our customers

We reached a major milestone in having installed more than two million smart meters for our customers, helping customers better manage their energy use and become more sustainable, while also bringing an end to estimated bills.

Helping businesses save energy

As part of our work to help businesses save energy, we’ve won awards for an energy efficiency programme we've been running at one of Transport for London's main offices. The building has so far seen an improvement in energy efficiency of more than 20%, producing savings on energy costs of around 42% or £470,000 each year and a carbon emissions reduction of 7% or 227 tonnes a year.

Ultra-fast charging for electric vehicles

Another big step in cleaning up our air is getting more electric vehicles on the road – and making it easier to charge them. In October, we opened our first ultra-fast charging points in the UK, in Birmingham. They recharge the batteries of the latest generation of electric cars with a range of around 100 miles in as little as 10 minutes.

Support for Alzheimer's Society

It's not only achievements directly connected to energy that we're proud of. Throughout this year, our colleagues have taken part in events to raise funds for our charity partner – Alzheimer's Society, cycling 200 miles and jumping out of planes to raise thousands for this well-deserving charity. Since 2016, we’ve supported the charity to the tune of £270,000, which has been raised by our employees and through our donations to help the work of community-based dementia support workers.
