Five New Year ‘s resolutions to start your year off right

Creating New Year's resolutions can give us a sense of purpose and excitement going into a new year – or indeed a new decade.

Instead of setting lofty goals that are hard to achieve, why not take a different approach this year and focus on making resolutions that are flexible, realistic and fun enough to actually execute.

Need some inspiration? Here are five resolutions that'll help you start 2020 with a positive outlook.

1. Clean up your eating

After a high sugar intake over the holidays, the new year is a great time to reintroduce healthy meals and recipes into your daily routine. Eating a balanced mix of whole grains, complex carbs, vegetables and fruits, healthy fats and lean protein can give you more energy, help you sleep better and improve your focus during the day.

Try not to restrict yourself; rather, work on making small, sustainable changes. You could aim to incorporate at least one vegetable into every meal, for example, replace half of your refined carbs with whole grains (like whole-wheat bread) or swap sugary afternoon snacks for fruit and nuts.

2. Spend time in nature

This year make a point to get outside more often. It's tempting to hibernate during the cold, dark months of winter, but getting some fresh air and vitamin D can boost your mood and enhance your overall wellbeing.

Depending on your schedule and access to the outdoors, spending more time in nature could mean hiking once a week, taking an evening stroll or simply eating your lunch at the park.

3. Introduce new sustainable routines

Making sustainable changes to your habits doesn't just help the environment, it can also improve your quality of life. Start by looking at your lifestyle to see where you can make the most impact, then pick one or two changes. If you order coffee every morning to-go, start bringing a reusable mug. Or, if you usually drive to work, try car sharing, biking or taking public transport a couple of days a week.

Other easy but impactful changes include replacing your kitchen roll with cloth napkins, ordering takeaways less often to save plastic, and installing energy saving light bulbs in your home.

4. Invest in your passion project

A new year is the perfect time to commit to a passion project. If there's something you've been wanting to learn or practice, now's your opportunity.

Look at your schedule and carve out at least one hour a week to work on your project, whether it's practicing yoga, learning a new language or mastering a new instrument. Not only will you hone new skills, but you'll also give yourself something to look forward to every week.

5. Plan a winter holiday on us

One of the best resolutions you can make for your health and happiness is planning a winter holiday. Getting away for a few days — whether to ski, sunbathe or explore a new city — can help rejuvenate you for the year ahead.

Right now, you can enter our prize draw to win a £5,000 holiday that could see you jetting off to an island paradise, winter haven or somewhere in between. Learn more about it and enter here.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how many (or few) resolutions you come up with, so long as you choose the ones that will make you feel happier, healthier and well as we enter a new decade.
