How does a combi boiler work?

Combi boilers heat water from the mains on demand so when you turn the tap on, the boiler fires up and hot water is delivered straight to you. As they’re designed to heat water immediately, there’s no need for a hot water cylinder or tank which are usually found with other boiler types.

Why choose a new combi boiler?

Space saving

Some Worcester combi boilers are small enough to fit in a cupboard. There’s no need for a hot water cylinder or tank, freeing up valuable space in your home.

Fast and safe installation

We'll install within five working days if you're without heating and hot water2 and apply safe space working practice to protect you following COVID-19.

Highly efficient

Combi boiler prices

The price of a Worcester combi boiler depends on the size needed for your home and whether you need it moving. You could get a new combi boiler, replaced in the same place, from £1,9951 when bought online.

How is a combi boiler different to other boiler types?

There are three types of boilers – combination, system and regular:

  • Combi boilers do not have a tank or cylinder, they heat hot water on demand i.e. when you switch your tap on
  • System boilers have a built-in heat exchanger, where water is heated and then stored in a cylinder, often found in an airing cupboard
  • Regular boilers rely on a cold water storage tank in the loft – water is heated by a heat exchanger and pumped to a cylinder where it’s stored ready for you to use

What size boiler do I need?

The size of a Worcester combi boiler refers to its output in kilowatts (kW). Generally, the more heat and hot water needed, the higher output you need. The right size depends on:

  • The size of your home (including how many radiators you have)
  • How much hot water you need i.e. a large family will have a higher demand than a small family
  • Water pressure in your area
  • Heat loss in your home

What's the difference between a combi boiler and a condensing boiler?

You can't directly compare combi boilers and condensing boilers, but the main features of them are:

  • A combination (combi) boiler gives both heating and hot water directly from your home's mains without needing a hot water cylinder or water tank in other parts of your home. So they're perfect for smaller to medium sized houses, giving heat and hot water on demand and only using hot water when it's needed.
  • Compared to older style boilers, condensing boilers can trap waste gases when the boiler is being used, which are normally released through a flue, and safely reuse it. So they're more efficient and eco-friendly than non-condensing boilers, using less energy for fuel and power. As it reuses the flue gases, anything that is eventually released through the flue is water vapour - which is why they're 'condensing'. Nowadays, all modern boilers are condensing.

Combi boilers that feature a flue heat recovery system become a combi condensing boiler too.

Which is the best combi boiler?

How long should a combi boiler last?

On average, a Worcester Bosch combi boiler should last around 10-15 years. Its lifespan mostly depends on the make, model and how well it has been serviced.
