How does a combination boiler work?

Combination boilers or combi boilers heat the water directly from the mains. So when you turn the tap on, the boiler fires up and hot water is delivered straight to you. Combi boilers are designed to heat water immediately, so there's no need for a hot water cylinder or water storage tank which we usually need with other types of boiler, saving space, electricity and money in the long run.

Save Space

Most combi boilers fit between kitchen cupboards - some will even fit in a standard kitchen cupboard. No water tank means less installation time and many can be fitted in under a day. Our range of Worcester Bosch boilers don't require either a hot water cylinder or storage tank for them to provide hot water.

Combi boiler prices

The price of a combi boiler depends on the size of the boiler you need for your home and whether you want to move it. You can get a new combi boiler from £2,395 when bought online.

How is a combi boiler different to other boiler types?

There are three types of boilers – combination, system and regular:

  • Combi boilers do not have a tank or cylinder, they heat hot water on demand, whenever you turn a tap on
  • System boilers heat water stored in a hot water cylinder ready for when you need to use it. They are ideal for homes with multiple hot water outlets.
  • Regular boilers heat water stored in a hot water cylinder so are good for homes with multiple hot water outlets. They require a cold water storage tank in the loft so are ideal for areas with low water pressure.

All of these are condensing boilers.

What size boiler do I need?

The size of a Worcester combi boiler refers to its output in kilowatts (kW). Generally, the more heat and hot water you need, the higher output you'll need. The right size of combination boiler depends on:

  • The size of your home (including the number of radiators)
  • The amount of hot water you need. Generally a large family has a higher demand than a small family
  • The water pressure in your area

A compact sized boiler that fits easily in a standard kitchen cupboard, with a rear flue option for where space is tight.

This quiet regular boiler, with a large colour backlit display to help you fine tune your heating for ultimate comfort, comes with a 5-year warranty as standard, and the option to upgrade to 7 or 10-year.

What's the difference between a combi boiler and a condensing boiler?

All new gas boilers including combi, regular and system are now condensing boilers. A combi condensing boiler traps waste gases released through a flue and safely reuse it to heat water, saving energy and fuel. They are more efficient and eco-friendlier than non-condensing boilers. Since the flue gases are used, the flue eventually releases water vapours (hence the term ‘condensing’ boilers.)
