How much is a boiler service?

As with every major appliance in your home, it’s important to check that they’re working properly, efficiently and safely - and your boiler is no exception.

Why is it important to service your boiler?

Nobody wants to be without hot water or heating, so having an annual service will help your boiler perform at its best and can reduce the risk of a breakdown, which could be expensive to fix. The average boiler tends to last between 10-15 years. Near the end of its lifespan, it’s more likely to develop issues which, if unchecked, can mean you need to buy a new boiler earlier than expected.

Protect your guarantee

Not only is having a service once a year good sense, it’s usually a requirement in maintaining your guarantee. If your boiler breaks down, you need to prove that it has been professionally serviced in the last 12 months. If you can’t, your guarantee won’t be valid and you won’t be covered for the cost of repairs, which can be hundreds. So it makes sense to pay for a boiler service. There is no fixed price as it depends on the cover you have and problems found during the service.

One-off boiler service

If you don’t have any cover, you’ll have to pay for a one-off boiler service. These can cost around £60-£120 (in London it tends to be more expensive) and usually take about an hour. They should include flue tests and you’ll be given a certificate afterwards. Any fixes to your boiler, including labour and parts, will come at an additional cost.

Boiler cover for your current boiler

To avoid high repair costs, you can take out boiler cover for your existing boiler. This means that rather than a one-off fee for a boiler service, it’s often included in your policy. This can save you money on parts and labour for any issue with your boiler. If you have a boiler and want to get cover, you can try our partner HomeServe.

With our HomeServe partnership, you can get gas boiler cover from only £7.99 per month in the first year. Your boiler will be given a health check to make sure it can be covered which will be carried out at the same time as your boiler service which is free in the first year, this usually costs £841. It also covers noisy boilers, faulty controls or if your heat exchanger needs replacing.

Get a service plan as part of your new boiler purchase

If you need a new boiler, we offer an exclusive boiler service plan that covers three annual services if you buy a new boiler from us. Not only that, but most fixes come at no extra cost. Worcester Bosch will also arrange the annual service, so it’s one less thing to worry about. And the work will be done by Gas Safe experts, trained by Worcester Bosch.

The boiler service plan costs £396 over the course of three years and gives you the best level of aftercare as well as ensuring your guarantee remains valid. This can be a one-off payment when you buy your boiler or added to your boiler on finance package with us2.

Does a boiler service always cost the same?

While the cost of a one-off service tends to be less than £100, there are situations where it could cost more. For example, an issue which will stop your boiler passing safety standards.

As part of our service plan, you also get a manufacturer’s parts and a labour guarantee too. This means there’ll be no extra costs for repairs needed during your boiler service. The same applies if you have the boiler cover option through HomeServe; if they can’t repair your boiler, they will replace it, so long as you’ve had cover for at least six months. If your boiler is fewer than seven years old they’ll install a new one free of charge too.

Overall, whilst a one-off service may appear cheaper than boiler cover, it doesn’t protect you from the unexpected costs if your boiler runs into problems, potentially making it a lot more expensive in the long-term.
